[DGD] case conversion

  Hm.  I know that using character syntax ('Z') has
been a bad idea for me in the past.  Try converting
'A' to "A"[0] and 'Z' to "Z"[0].  If the problem goes
away, you're doing something funny.

  Is character syntax even allowed in DGD?
