We did some digging in Google's usenet archive and think you are off
by a year.

The earliest posting by Lars about LPmud seems to be this one:

  http://groups.google.com/group/alt.mud/msg/9b08efb9b3ba16b5

It was posted on February 8, 1990:

There are some discussions about how a multi user dungeon really
should be done. I have made one, and it works, although there are of
  course lot of bugs yet.

My game can be seen as a cross between Abermud and tinyMUD. It is up
and running for public access, but as I don't consider it complete
yet, I am not ready to go public with the address. Any one
interested to try can mail me a request.

  My game is called LPmud.

Then on April 11, 1900 he talks about it being public some day:

  http://groups.google.com/group/alt.mud/msg/1d5874a3a7970481

  <...>
There are many players from outside Sweden (most), and as the source
some day will be public, I guess we can have discussions here in
  this group.

The oldest tar file references anywhere that we found was in this
message posted May 26, 1990:

The Lpmud files are very up to date, I believe. Someone please let
me know if I'm wrong. Here's a current list of what's available for
  Lpmud:

Around July 7, 1990 LPmud 2.0 was released:

In the USA, you can FTP it from einstein.math.ksu.edu (129.130.30.9)
in /pub/mud/lpmud-2.0.tar.Z. Also, try our our LPmud at port 2056
  on einstein.
