Well, different situations for different folks! For me, the main cost
is in fact the time it takes. The other items are free for me. (My
computer is on all the time anyway, and so is my cablemodem, which
doesn't come with any data-based charges. And, 2 months ago, my
regular modem connection had the same characteristics.)
One of the reasons I decided to take the right-wing extreme on this
issue is the selfish one that I want the MUD-Dev list to continue. If
we put more and more of the burden on JC (and it already is a quite
large burden), then it may reach the point where the value of doing
it, for him, is not enough to justify the effort. That's his call,
of course, but from my selfish point of view, I want to avoid choosing
to put more work on his shoulders.
