I assumed it meant an environment with a text-based interface rather
than a graphical interface.

Indeed, assuming you mean what you sound like you mean, yes.

Indeed, but most of them seem to be opposed to graphical elements that
affect gameplay rather than strictly the interface.

In any event, Raph appears to me to be asking whether text commands
should necessarily be english words, as opposed to single keys, unixish
abbreviations, etc.
