It's been like that long before MUDs.  It's apparently been explained that
everybody has a built-in desire to create: the women's desire is fulfilled
by giving birth, while guys go out and tinker with stuff that they want to
make "live".  This finally led to "intelligent" devices, like the computer.
So, when the computer was starting to be used for entertainment purposes, it
was already a male-oriented field.  The computer audience has been biased
that way ever since.
