Not fully related and I think I've mentioned it before, but in the multiuser
VR community there is a spatial model based on AURAs: a sphere (or something
else) around each object. When two auras intersect they can communicate.

AWARENESS: quantifies interaction between objects
AURA:   when two auras collide they start to negotiate awareness.

FOCUS:  a represenation of the observer's interest in other objects
NIMBUS: a representation of the observed's "attention ability"

There are variations on this though.  Maybe it can be an inspiration.  Other
keywords: DIVE, MASSIVE, MASSIVE-2, Benford, Greenhalgh, Hagsand...
