I'd actively recommend looking at stuff other than the Diku derivatives.

There are a number of innovative things around.  You could even choose to
read the thread about MUD implementation languages for a good start on a
list of interesting systems.  Alternatively, you could decide not to do the
research and remain in ignorance of a vast number of fascinating ideas.
