This is what the commercial MUD systems from Simutronics (www.play.net) do
(i.e. Gemstone III, Dragon Realms, etc.) As these MUDs support thousands of
simultaneous players, it must be reasonably efficient. As the first month is
free with those MUDs, you might want to play each a little of each to get a
feel for it before you start implementing it yourself.
