Don't forget that the virtual interactive community (VIC) industry is
also composed of MOOs, MUSHs, the other M**s, talkers, simulations,
and countless other categories. After analyzing several of the
segments, I conclude that communities start for a variety of reasons.
Lengthy processes for becoming a "wizard" is only one such motivation.

Many mudders enjoy the feeling of achievement gaining a "level" gives
them. If their current MUD has improperly balanced game dynamics,
they may start their own with those game dynamics corrected.
Therefore, MUDs are frequently evolving from one MUD to another. We
are, however, starting to reach a point where stock C code is not
adequate.

>From my slightly limited experience with MOOs, I gather that their
motivations for logging on are much more social. The player bases
I've spoken with frequently have many players that have been around
from the very beginning of the MOO. Unless it is a programming
community, everyone is satisfied with the social environment and they
have no reason to start a competitor.

Sometimes, however, cliques develop and their presence becomes
inappropriate for the MOO. For example, a group of talented Puerto
Ricans on a programming community may decide to develop their own
Spanish MOO. If the programming community is predominantly
English-speaking, they will probably find little support outside of
the clique.

This discussion may be a bit philosophical for this thread. If anyone
wants to continue it, starting another thread.
