Consider the following model, not only from a rank-point aspect, but
as a trust model and as a reputation system for a MUD:

I've read a couple of short stories that were set in a world where oaths
were real, binding both you and the rest of the world. The strength your
word carried depended on your prominence in the world so, for instance, a
woodcutter couldn't take wood from a forest the King had sworn was to stand
untouched.

I use a similar concept that grants people powers based on the number of
people who have faith in them. This provides heroes with the power to
achieve superhuman feats. Under this system a trusted and respected king
wields real power.
