"On the table sits a ball of wax with pieces of string randomly
hanging out the sides. You raise an eyebrow and try to light one
of the wicks, but it just makes a loud hissing noise and turns
black. The heat from your lighter does however melt the wax,
which spreads out all over the table creating a terrible mess.
Suddenly one of the strings catches fire, and the candle springs
to life! Flames spread all over the wax-covered workbench, then
leap to a nearby stash of candle wax. By the time you manage to
get the fire extinguished, you've lost the raw materials required
to make 10 candles."
"On the table sits a masterfully made candle. The wick and wax
are in such perfect balance that the candle will burn twice as
long and twice as bright as a normal candle, and emit light that
is pure and clean. The different colors of wax woven through the
candle tantalize the eye and draw the observer into their depths."
You can do the same for most of the other craft skills: catastrophic
failure = ruined materials, stunning success = increased quality and
value.
