Some time ago, I read in the Daedalus Project that in EQ, when one
of the guild members had fallen on hard times, his friends and
guild-mates offered to pitch in with mailed or wired money to help
him get back on his feet. (I'm paraphrasing, of course; my memory is
imperfect.)

While I'm CERTAINLY not against the these 'myth', as you call them,
what would you say to people who scam others with a sort of con job,
and pretend to have fallen on hard times? They could exploit these
virtual friendships, and even more, this would cost those 'taken in'
more than just an emotional backlash, but also financial loss.

What's your opinion.. to warn players of such people, and thus
possibly make them more cynical and suspicious of their fellows, or
to just cross your fingers and hope it doesn't happen, or even to
simply hope that if it happens, the players don't demand that YOU
compensate their loss?
