There is actually a much more advanced EQ server emulator out there
called EQEmu:

  http://www.eqemu.net/

I've played with it a bit several months ago, (I'm not an EQ fan).
It has a lot of potential, some serious things to fix, and
relatively poor documentation.

However, they feel their documentation is grade-A.

  (I got into an argument about it with one of them on ICQ, because
  their documentation doesn't account for people behind
  routers/NAT/firewalls, and they refuse to help you if you
  are. *snork*)

I get the impression it's run by a bunch of high-school ages kids.
(Attitude, message context, etc)
