Of course it will be bought and sold as a commodity - since it
already is, that's not exactly a startling vision of the future,

Let me catch you up.

The answer is that no, we will never see such a thing.

The reason that this is the answer is because then it wouldn't be
virtual currency, it would be real currency, and no one is going to
make a new, real-world currency, just to buy and sell stuff in
games.  They'll use a current, existing, real-world currency for
that.  If you want to use real money in-game, just use real money
in-game.  The kind of money your employer or customers give you, is
the kind of thing people expect to receive from you, when they want
whatever it is that your tribe calls "money".
