They also did a brilliant job on the setting. It doesn't look like
"a bunch of models plopped onto a height field." The outdoor
settings look like a city, and the indoor settings look like
building interiors. There's crap sitting around. The run-down urban
theme is occasionally reminscent of Quake II, but overall, the art
is excellent. The buildings have restrooms, hand trucks sitting in
hallways, and magazines sitting in the lobby (with titles you can
read). The streets have bits of litter blowing down the street,
dumpsters sitting behind buildings, etc. Sure, it's all made out of
teflon-plated adamantium just like most MMO settings, but the visual
theme hit the mark very, very solidly. Even if people lose interest
in the game, Cryptic has a killer architectural walkthrough system.
