AD&D suggested retiring characters after 18th level. The entire
system was roughly based on the number "20".
- Stats went from 3-18 (human maximums)
- "To Hit" probabilities were based on a d20
- Armor Class was based on 20 (-10 "best" to 10 "worst")
- Skills were rolled off the stats stats against a 20 sided die
18 is Holy because it comes from the great-grandfather of all RPGs,
AD&D. Praise Gygax!
