If you're new, or weak in the particular RPG's canon (need to look
stuff up), or very unsure what your character would do in what is a
fast exchange IC, having a few minutes to gather yourself, and
construct a response is a great blessing. That, and some people just
don't have a quick wit at all.

You can't construct something on the fly, and you would end up with
a weak and probably not equally satisfying response if forced to
give it in real time.

Perhaps it heavily depends on the specific setting which method is
'better'?
