I think for skills and coinage to be a single
currency, you have to be able to cash out both into
the other.  

Entropia Universe (entropiauniverse.com) has managed
something like this by having the science fiction idea
of a skillchip that any character can use to lose an
amount of a skill, and then sell or give it to someone
else.  There is a 10% loss putting the skill into the
chip, and a 10% loss taking skills out of a chip.

I'm sure you could come up with a magical analog, like
a memory extractor.

One of the odd side effects is that skill gain has to
be part of the balance of the treasure system.  It
also makes situations where the player can harm a
monster without risk a bad idea to the wealth of the
game.
