Regarding this, Blizzard did a far better job with their expansion. As
a starting character, when you're around level 10 on the Eredar island,
you're asked to warn various NPC (all of which you encountered before,
so
you know exactly where they are) of an impending attack, and prompty,
so you're handed a temporary fast running mount (15mn only), which lets
you experience the player mounts of later.

In the expansion, within 15mn, you're thrown on the saddle of a flying
mount, and sent on bombing runs over ennemy positions, which prefigures
the day you have a flying mount and paradrop on top of unsuspecting
opponents (pvp) or ennemies (mobs) :)
