Consulting a lawyer may be expensive and it frankly may not be worth it.
I'm not saying don't consult a lawyer. I'm saying do your research before
you do. Nine times out of ten, you can deal with the situation yourself if
you know where you stand and who to contact. But you are right. Advice on
the internet is ultimately worthless, but you can find books at the
library about copyright law (I've got one with the whole thing printed in
an appendix) that are written by lawyers, with more editorial
responsibility than, say, Wikipedia. But hey, if you've got access to a
lawyer who will consult for free about international copyright violations,
I say go for it.
Also, I believe Copyright law is an international agreement between
something like 76 countries (actually, it's like five different
agreements, several of which are requirements to do business with the US
or Britain). I can look up the details if anyone is interested. Though
there are slight variations between countries made through national
rulings on things like the fringes of fair use, for the large part,
Copyright law is the same throughout most of the known world. If you are a
protected in America, you are protected equally in Austrailia.
