Regarding crafting, A Tale in the Desert is probably currently the
pinnacle of that genre. Anyone who's tried to cut a gem there knows
what I'm talking about.

(each mechanic was sufficiently different that people were interested in
 some, and not by others)

And it's not recent. It just remains a very niche area.
