[DGD]Regarding 1.1.59 and (Urgh!) MSVC 5.0

Either compile with MSVC 4.x, or turn off optimization before
compiling.  It seems that the safe optimizations selected in the
4.x makefile map to unsafe ones under MSVC 5.x.
