Hmm, I assume what you really want is the possibility to do some
Text-layout. Pure Escape Sequences are very limited for this
task. Perhaps you are better off, if you do the next step.
Have a look at http://xmlterm.com 
If you use this as a terminal you could make your mud talk XML and use a
much bigger variety of tags. And as XML is meant to provide semantics and
not exact rendering information, you avoid the "wrong colour trap".

The drawback of course is, that you need a special client and most current
mud clients will become useless.
