I would agree with everything that Noah has written on his web
site, at least on this topic :) My personal take on the matter
(I'm the author of Melville) is that if your goal is to look at
a small but functional native mudlib and understand how it works,
you're better off with Melville, and if your goal is anything
else, you're probably better off with Phantasmal. You could
build on top of Melville if you didn't want any of the features
DGD and Phantasmal have to offer, like the on-the-fly recompile
features. But you could do that just as well on Phantasmal,
simply not using the features in question.
If you wanted to learn how to write your own native mudlib
from scratch, you'd probably do best to spend a while with
Melville getting the real basics down, then go straight to
the kernel mudlib and study it for a longer while.
