FYI - this was the exact problem; am now studying how to modify melville to
take advantage of the net package - don't yet know if it will be possible.

Yeah, missed that bit about him using the net package.

Perhaps he didn't realize the net package, in addition to patching the
driver source, also patches the kernel mudlib.
So, obviously, similar kinds of changes will need to be made the melville
mudlib source code before one can expect it to work, I'd think.  At least,
that's my sense looking at the actual patch.  A telnet port needs to be
explicitly opened using the open_port() efun...at least that's what the
telnet_port object is doing in it's create() function.
