SVN is supposed to "fix" some of the quirks of CVS and be more or less
a replacement for it.

As for advice to surviving a rm -rf on the wrong folder, how about
setting up a second user and storing your SVN repo in that users home
dir. That way try as hard as you like you won't be able to delete it
from your account.
