Unless you're doing really stupid things, your hardware will break when it 
feels it's time to break. It happens. Disk failure is common enough that you 
need to plan for it as an expected event.

Backups are NOT OPTIONAL. They do NOT require expensive media. Just get a damn 
gmail account and mail yourself the .tar of your source every day. There is a 
ton of free storage available on the 'net these days, and that's a perfectly 
good place to store your backups.
