Hope. If you don't enter lotteries, you have no real hope of fate smiling
on you and dumping a load of cash on you. If you do enter lotteries, then
you have some hope. For people who believe their lives to be dead-end
affairs, having that hope can be important.

:Total aside: The casinos in Vegas report that they tend to have poor
:gambling earnings during the Vega COMDEX. It seems that COMDEX visitors
:don't gamble -- the reason posited by the casino reps interviewed and
:quoted, was that COMDEX attendees know their odds too well.
:
:They also report that any show involving female nudity is guaranteed to be
:booked solid.

I laughed aloud at that! Good thing I'm in my own living room. I guess it
makes sense - the average computer geek is a single male, with enough
cynicism to not bother with gambling. Of course, one of the most geeky
people I know does gamble, but only because he is practicing his work
with the odds, etc. And he doesn't even seem to be aware that women
exist. [Good thing he's not on this list!]
