[Caliban:]
:There's a lot of talk here about internals, and next to no talk about
:what finally ends up on the screen when a user logs on. The user is
:different now. He's not as likely to be a CompSci major at a university
:as he is to be a twelve year old kid sitting at his dad's computer. But
:we're not discussing ways to make the game more accessible to a wider
:variety of users. I think that's a pretty big mistake.
Well, OK. Has anyone got any ideas for making MUDs accessible to more
people, other than by using a GUI interface? If we investigate that
area, we have to be very careful to not get into the trap of talking
about graphical MUDs, that many traditional mudders seem to abhore the
very idea of. Personally, I think a good GUI on a traditional text MUD
is definitely the way to go. Personally I hate most GUI's, but then I'm
not the abovementioned new player. I've watched a friend of mine play
with my MUD, however, and it has driven home very strongly the point that
before he can enjoy the game, I have to provide alternatives (preferably
using the mouse) to nearly everything that can be done with text input.
