AI Path Finding

I'm looking to apply the A* algorithm, so my mobiles might have a better
chance to find their way around town.  I'm not well versed in AI concepts,
and I was wondering if any of you could provide some insight or thoughtful
discussion concerning this aspect of a MUD.  If you have any books you
cherish regarding this topic, an ISBN would be extremely helpful.  Please
excuse the newbie nature of this posting... but any thought any the matter
would be greatly appreciated.
