I'd like to tie it to something like gold.  I think it would be much
better than the standard 'rent' to keep inflation in check.  You could
also award 'titles' to lands in quests...  With good OLC this might
even get the players interested....  This would be best in a world
that had no real concept of dropping link or logging out (other than the
computer makes your decisions.)  In other words, build yourself a keep,
and populate it well with enough guards and solid doors to keep yer 
arse safe during the long night!

My next space based game will encorporate this somehow, at least the last
part.  (For those who participated in the Persistant Storage thread, I've
got an implementation that I think is a good start.  I should have it 
up on my web page for public perusal in a day or two, I'll let the list
know..)
