He's not making that assumption.  He is (correctly?) assuming that you'll
use a different interface for other non-MUD applications, based on the
premise that MUDding is a specialised and unique enough activity to
warrant a non-generic (at least at the browser level) interface.

I see how forward/back could be used in a help window.  I fail to see how
they could be profitably used in a gaming window.
