To expand on that last point: it is (very) typical to see, on GoP muds,
a player's first (primary) character be very effective in terms of gameplay
but rather boring in terms of roleplay or uniqueness. (Think of the
typical warrior decked out with all of the normal kick-ass-warrior gear.)
Since they already have a highly effective character, their next few are
likely to be far more interesting - an untrustable pickpocket, a
self-righteous crusader, or an introspective monk. These second characters
are probably more likely to make "bad" decisions that the player would never
risk with their primary character - the pickpocket stealing from his sleeping
groupmembers, the crusader crying "I challange all evil!" and throwing
themselves at a foe they know they can't win against, or the monk refusing to
wear "a gem-studded bracelet" because they believe that excessive ornamentation
disturbs purity of thought.
