I can't remember whom I'm replying to here, as I accidentally deleted the
mail before replying, but someone mentioned that on his mud, they replace
swear words with random symbols, and that even though it can be gotten
around, the users don't generally try because they can be mutd.
My question to you then is why even bother with the filters? If you have
successfully created an atmosphere where players can swear by getting
around the filters, but don't do it, why bother with filters? We don't use
any filters, and have created a similar atmosphere, and have basically no
problem to speak of with foul language, racism, etc on public channels.
Very occassionally of course we'll get some newbie moron spamming the
newbie channel with bollocks, or a bigger player will lose his temper and
shout something inappropriate, but this is really few and far between, and
as soon as someone shouts something nasty, _everyone_ gets on his or her
case, nearly always shutting said potty-mouted player up. I realize this
isn't so scalable to big games, but if you've only got 100 people online
or so, I don't think it's dificult to create an atmosphere where players
behave semi-responsibly.
