Actually, I was speaking to a GM for simutronics and she said that in some
of the "world-breaking" events (like the invasion of the capital city by
pirates) two things happened: A) that everyone that was in the game that
missed contributing to the outcome of the event can tell you everything that
happened, almost as if they thought that they were in the middle of being
involved, and B) everyone marks their "old-timer-ness" by how many of these
events they've passed through.

You still have to be careful of repeatedly favoring folks, but big events
are good for the game.
