Remember target markets.
There has been some discussion on this list of Simultronic's target
markets and player base demographics, such as the fact that the
majority of their players are (faint memory?) over 30 with many over
40, with a high percentage of "professionals" (lawyers, doctors,
professional engineers, etc).
Now consider a your favourite MUD, and change the player base to
match the following imaginary stats:
Average individual: US$100K - US$150K (US national average is $36K)
Average education: 6 year college degree
Average Age: 35
Sex: 60% male
Profession: 30% executive, 20% entrepreneur, 40% professional
What would change in your MUD? How would the community change? How
might their willingness to pay $3K or even $10K for some in-game
item/benefit/position change? While I intensely doubt the above
stats match or even approximate Simultronic's (or Achea's) -- I do
suspect that such affluent target markets are significantly
under-served and under-represented in the gaming arena.
