I can probably do this with fairly minimal effort (ie all the
oeffort is other people's). I have the FTP server on ftp.kanga.nu
setup to allow people to volunteer to maintain specified branches of
the FTP tree in a moderately secure fashion (ie authentication is
still in the clear, but against a database private to the FTP
sserver, and each user only has access to a chroot jail). What's
this mean?

Say Bubba offers to maintain the DIKU branch:

  ftp://ftp.kanga.nu/pub/MUD/Servers/DikuMUD/

He'd get an FTP login that permits him access to only

  ftp://ftp.kanga.nu/pub/users/bubba/

(which doesn't exist yet, pending that mysterious Bubba person).
However files placed there would show up via the magic of symlinks
in:

  ftp://ftp.kanga.nu/pub/MUD/Servers/DikuMUD/

As a result, Bubba could post files and maintain that branch fo the
FTP tree exactly as he sees fit without affecting the rest of the
FTP tree (or others doing the same).

Any interest in adopting a branch of the FTP tree?
