Does your dream include having a large playerbase?

How important is it to you to have many players, vs. having fewer players on
the type of MUD you want to make?

Honestly, I don't understand why anyone would put up a MUD that they don't
even like, just for the opportunity to spend all their spare time admin'ing
the mud they don't like.

I'd say do what you want, and you'll collect the sorts of players that want
the same thing.

Well, you'll collect them if you have a nice web page, anyway.
