Which of course prompts me to ask, "Where does the gold [coin] come
from?"

Think of the processes that cause a gold coin: mine the gold ore,
process the ore into pure ingots, mine iron ore, process the iron ore
into pure iron, form the iron into coin dies, build a die machine,
operate it, distribute the coins, etc. And think of the things that
could go wrong: the ore is stolen, the dies are stolen and used to
mint debased coin, good coins are shaved, etc. There's a whole
mini-game in just the coins themselves.
