Actually, The Palace could have been made to be a graphical MUD.
The client and the server supported scripting (an, uh, "interesting"
language called Iptscrae [Yes, Pig Latin for "script"]).  There was
a version of the server that could be run by home users.

Admittedly, it would have taken a lot of work (and wouldn't have
been secure, or have much depth, etc.), but it could have been done.
During my time at the Communities.com (rest in peace), we discussed
the possibility of doing such a game on the (more robust) company
servers, but usually put it on the back burner due to the time it
would have required.
