[MUD-Dev] Why are we all making RPGs?

I would have to say it's because RPG is the genre the really lends
itself best to being played on a massive scale.

A fighting game like Tekken or something is best with 2 players,
therefore will probably never really be MM.

A racing game like NASCAR is best with 4-8 more than 20 would be too
many, so it wont be MM.

FPS might work well as a MM. These games are heading in that
direction. 20-60 players seems to be the norm and Planetside is on
the way. The thing with the FPS is that they are generally light on
story, and multiplayer matches are generally a bunch of players in
an enclosed area duking it out over a flag. Would this concept
really benefit from more places to go, and the ability to leave the
map? Sure, but if it did you would be starting to step on the toes
of what could be called an RPG.

RTS games work best with 2-6 teams. If you wanted to have a larger
scale RTS you would still be best off with only a few teams. WWII
online and Shadowbane seem to be this, also to a lesser extent DaoC
and AO. Still the last 3 are called RPGs.

So, beyond an RPG or RTS/Wargame and possibly some sort of
simulation (like the sims, which shares some concepts with RPGs)
there really doesnt seem to be much that would benefit from the
whole Massive-Online concept.
