There's always a way if one is willing to deal with the side effects
and the whining. Tagging items with ownership, age-caps, limited
number of transfers, forced deletion of X hours worth of last-used
equipment, multiple worlds with quotas on character creation in
each, etc... Not to say that these are great ideas, but there are
lots of possibilities...
Btw, strictly speaking a character is just a personality (with a
repertoire) and may be transferred from game to game. Look at that
infamous Janey character for instance (maybe more like what I would
call a persona, but...) One should find another word for the
aggregate of formalized character attributes.
