A further idea to the many good ones experssed on unique magic
systems is tying the magic strength and effectiveness to things the
PCs won't initially recognise. Magic should perhaps respond a little
differently at night than day, or under a full moon than not. Put in
a solar eclipse and then perhaps some real crazy stuff can happen :)

Perhaps if you're in woods death magic is weaker, or in a stone
circle, summoning magic better. All sorts of options!

Variety in the systems is fun for everyone to explore, even if
others have done so before you.
