Yes. For each of the 5 default modes, you have a dozen of so
"channels" ranging from local talk to emotes, and so on. Each of
these can be turned on or off for that panel; the default is what
the panels start preconfigured in when you start your character.

The problem being, of course, that 90% of the people don't even
notice that they're no longer receiving sends. Yesterday evening, I
was trying to meet somebody in Camelot, and it was extremely
frustrating.

  /send Hello?
  /send Do you hear me?
  /send Hello?
  Soandso sends you "hello?"
  /send Ahhh, ok, so where do we meet?
  Soandso sends you "hello? you there?"
  /send Goddamit, switch chat panels!!!!
  Soandso sends you "hello?"

At that point, I picked up the phone :)
