Well, certainly the top 3 US games (EQ, DAoC, UO) the creators had
MUD backgrounds.  I'm not sure about AC, AO, and Jumpgate.  I know
that the WW2O, 10Six, and MCO teams had little or no MUD background,
as well as Majestic (which is hard to call an MMOG, but billed
itself as one).  In the case of those games, it was argued that they
were so different from MUD's that MUDding experience wouldn't apply.
True or not, those last 4 certainly they have been less than stellar
in their success, in spite of having a broader base market appeal
(although to be fair, WW2O and MCO do continue to operate).

Myself, I didn't play any MUD's until much later, I started my
online gameplay with the "first generation" graphical MUD's (Shadows
of Yserbius, Neverwinter Nights, and Legends of Kesmai).
