Well it is questionable if such a world should host millions of
players but if it would host 30k to 80k people at the same time on
the same world, would be already interesting. In any case I just
wanted to add some details about the idea of grid computing if
someone is interested in the concept (as independently how large
should be the shard, the basic model could be applied to gain
different benefits).
The Butterfly-grid is one of the first systems and implementations
of IBM Grid Computing concept (IBM is working on implementing a grid
between the superclusters of 4 reserch institutes in US (National
Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), San Diego
Supercomputing Center (SDSC), Argonne National Lab and California
Institute of Technology (Caltech)). Most of the know-how comes from
the Globus project ( basis also for Butterfly grid system).
More information about the Globus project can be found at:
http://www.globus.org/
An introduction to grid computing can be found at:

Part of the Globus project is also focused on solving problems about
sharing access to storage services and or replication of storage
data. All software developed by the Globus Project is made
available under a liberal open source license. This license allows
the software to be used by anyone and for any purpose, without
restriction.
