It's sort of old news, but Quake II is now a GPL product. You can
read all about it at http://www.quakesrc.org/ . The source includes
the graphics engine, client, and server.

I think it is amazing how idsoftware continues to set the standards
for how to have a game company that can produce a game, license it's
engine, and stil provide a truckload of support to the developer
community. And the other FPS companies have continued to do the
same -- although more limited.

For those that followed the early history of Quake, the original
concept was to have an open multiuser world. But it was the pressure
of the player base itself that forced idsoftware to limit the scale
of Quake.

Right now QII is the closest thing to a freely available, heavily
documented, community supported MM-whatevertherestofthisis core
candidate. The closest one on the engine side, is Crystalspace.
Don't ask about virtual worlds, they have all turned into secret
govenment research projects I think.
