A more interesting point, and one which has been raised before, is
that arguably roleplaying has no value or interest to the majority
of MUD players except as a marketing term that they expect (even
demand) to see used in reference with MUD-type games that they think
will interest them. They don't roleplay, they don't know how to
roleplay, they don't want to roleplay, and they have no interest in
roleplaying, and they don't particularly like or want roleplaying
about them when they see it -- but they do have an interest in
wandering around a MUD world killing monsters etc in something they
think of as a "roleplaying game".
This of course drives the people that do like/want/appreciate
roleplaying (pick your definition) batty and is the source of
endless confusion and broken assumptions. Same term, different
populations, diametrically different definitions, neither population
(generally) recognises the validity of the other's definition.
