In combat MUDs, the really interesting stuff is sporadic and
scattered enough that you have to be in the world and inquisitive
really to find your way to it, I think.
More creative MMPs, MUSHes and the like that center more on
creativity will really offer the first step - a reliable stream of
player content that is worth enjoying on its own. The second step
is the ability to rank and advertise. Both the Sims and Star Wars
Galaxies are dipping their toe in this pool (as what I'm working on,
but we're not quite ready to talk about it yet. =)
The concepts of lurking are, of course, nothing new. In the old
days of newsgroups, it was estimated that there were hundreds or
thousands of readers for each actual poster in a popular newsgroup.
It's difficult to say how adding a monthly fee changes that
equation.
