The missing point here is that in the real world, we toil as the
world demands (often not fun). In games, we toil when and as we
care to. Or so the theory goes. That's why it's called fun.
Because we want to do a certain activity. Such is the problem with
games with no significant activities other than a couple of
treadmills - the choice of toiling or not is really not in the
player's control. There isn't substantial entertainment other than
the toiling. So if a player visits the game, they face the
treadmills.
That said, the reason that I believe players go to the games is to
be in an environment where they can interact with other people,
though their avatars or simply through chat. But they want the
context of the game in order to have that interaction. So people go
to the game in order to interact, but they find that they face the
same old treadmill. That's where it's not fun.
It's worse when the socialization is tied to the treadmills, a
relationship which has been discussed here before.
All this is coming from a guy who used to have an insane work ethic
in real life. Unfortunately, I hit level 60 and got bored :)
